Water Tower 4, Snorkel : il s’agit du tout premier camion bras-élevateur au monde utilisé pour la lutte
contre les incendies.

Dans les années 50, alors qu’il se promenait dans les rue de Chicago, Robert J Quinn alors Commissaire du
Département d’Incendie de la ville de Chicago eut une idée en voyant un camion bras-élévateur réparant
les lampadaires.

Son but était de trouver un système qui permettrait aux pompiers de combattre plus facilement
les feux d’habitation, d’immeuble et de bâtiment industriel qui faisaient alors rage à cette époque.

Il décide alors d’en ramener un au département et d’installer un moniteur sur la nacelle.

La différence entre la grande-échelle et que le bras-élévateur avait un angle d’attaque beaucoup plus
important et qu’il était plus facilement manoeuvrable face un à feu de bâtiment.

Après avoir fait ses preuves lors d’un incendie, la Water Tower 4 sera renommé en Snorkel 1 en 1959.

Le département achètera alors plusieurs snorkel pour les former en compagnies et en mettra
dans les squad compagnies.

Aujourd’hui, avec les nouvelles technologies dans les fourgons d’incendie, grande-échelle et les normes
de sécurité incendie renforcé, seules les 4 compgnies de squad de Chicago ont un camion bras-élévateur.
